Cervical dizziness and osteopathy

Le vertigini da cervicale e l’Osteopatia

Cervical dizziness is a disorder characterized by the presence of dizziness and pain to the neck and a nonspecific sensation of alteration of orientation in space and imbalance originating from abnormal afferent activity from the neck.

People with this problem complain of dizziness aggravated by head movements accompanied by neck pain and headaches.

Dizziness can be described as illusory sensation of movement . They can be distinguished into subjective and objective depending on whether it is the person or the external environment that is perceived as unstable.

However, vertigo is often also described as the feeling of feeling disconnected or like inability to maintain balance.

CAUSE OF DIZZINESS

The causes of vertigo are different and disparate and include inner ear disorders but also more serious problems such as of the central nervous system !

Very often, however, they can be caused from banal dysfunctions of the structures of the cervical spine (muscles, facet joints…)

This is because the sense of balance and spatial orientation of our body is given by a correct interaction between the signals coming from the sensitive pathways with our central nervous system .

In fact, the cervical muscles and joints have specific receptors (proprioceptors) which, together with the visual and vestibular systems, constitute the main channels to allow our body to understand how it is oriented every single moment with respect to everything else and towards the individual parts.

The incorrect transmission of these signals, whether it occurs due to receptor dysfunction or to signal processing at a central level, determines an imprecise and incorrect representation of the orientation of the head and neck with respect to the rest ; this can often result in vertigo syndrome.

OSTEOPATHIC TREATMENT

Osteopathic treatment aims to eliminate the dysfunctional restrictions present at the cervical level and beyond through direct techniques, making it an excellent ally for the resolution of this disorder!
